Dream House, So Close...

What sort of house is your dream house?

I must admit I love all styles of houses and have been lucky enough to see many wonderful places over the years I have been writing and photographing them for magazines.

One of my own "dreams" has been to live in an old rambling weatherboard farmhouse and here I am, almost. We have lived here in the old, heritage-listed house for a number of years now since gradually extricating ourselves from our house right in the city of Sydney. The complete opposite of this, I suppose.

In between our beach house and commercial renovation projects and other careers, this house has waited for us to get our act together. Our friends have waited for dinner invitations - we don't have a dining room. My office in is that room, as is the guest bed. I guess that shows what our priorities have been. It has been a case of putting up with things....

My husband Rob, who is (conveniently for me) an architect and heritage specialist, has been my long-suffering partner in our renovation exploits. We actually bought our first renovation project within months of meeting each other. I reckon he proposed to me only a couple of weeks after we met as I was the first girl he'd gone out with who had renovated her own place.

So here we are living long term in a renovation. The main hallway of the farmhouse we lined with boards and very cool paneling (more than two years ago) are still in an undercoated state, waiting for a new pressed metal ceiling to magically appear.

The church hall is painfully close to being habitable, now all the walls and ceilings have been patched and lined and electrics done. The 165 year old floorboards lay covered by masonite and I am looking forward to the day when we reveal them and get them sanded and finished. The high boarded ceiling with exposed trusses looks fabulous.

{ Camille's Annie Sloan Purple Dresser }

I promised Camille a new dresser in her room. (which you can see here)
She was dying for purple.
I was not.

Well, thank you Annie Sloan chalk paint, 'cause I found the perfect shade by mixing Duck Egg Blue with Scandinavian Pink and a dash of Old Violet.
Now we're both happy. It's the perfect shade of lavender.

I keep the handles exactly how I found them. Some weird mint green color.
(And I have no before, because, if you follow this page you know I'm a spaz and have no time for "before" photos. Most of the time.)

The photo block is from my friend, and artist Michelle Ciarlo-Hayes, I LOVE it and so do my girls.

Her knick knacks and hair accessories are kept in a two tiered cake plate thingy I made with a green depression glass candle stick and mini cake pans.

If she actually keeps her clothes in it, I'll remain happy.

Weekend Fun

image

If you are looking for some weekend fun and some weekend eye candy, then you should definitely check out the Bosch Net Zero home at Serenbe.  It is open through July and features some stunning interiors furnished by Ballard Designs.  The Bosch Net Zero home really shows that living sustainably can be stylish as well.

Stylist Jill Sharp Brinson infused this home with rustic elements and warm and cozy style to create a comfortable home. She even used a few items that were found in the woods around Serenbe.

The bedroom below is one of my favorite rooms in the home. I love the fabric hanging behind the headboard. Note to self: Must use this in a client’s design soon. Any takers?

Wood stacked to the top of the fire place.  LOVE!  Not very practical but it looks so pretty for pictures.

{ What's in Your Bag? ~ Cassie from Primitive & Proper }

{What's in your bag?}
Primitive & Proper

Primitive & Proper
Hello Painted Home readers!  I am Cassie from Primitive and Proper and I am so excited to be here today on Denise's awesome blog!  Today, you get to take a peak into my summer beach bag, and the timing couldn't be better, because I am headed there next week, not to make you jealous or anything... ;)

So let's have a look, shall we?  First of all, this summer I am so excited to use my brand new striped beach bag!  Isn't it fun and beachy?

Now that I am in my 30's the most important thing to me is sunscreen.  As a teenager and in my early 20's I was not so careful, and I cringe at how I treated my skin.  So now, I take care of it.  I share the same sunblock as my kids with an SPF 50.  I am not taking chances here, people! We use Banana Boat SPF 50 Sport, since we go in the water and this one is water proof.

I also like to make sure I have a towel, of course.  I have an old J. Crew towel from when I used to work there years ago, but these days I would love this one from Lands End.

Another essential is a bottle of water!  We love these camelbak aluminum water bottles.  (I should add I don't actually have one, but my kids each have the kids version!)

And if my kids were not going to be with me, and it was evening, I would need this on the beach.  I am not too picky about brands, but I love organic malbecs the most!

And of course, while I am at the beach, I will need some reading materials.   I would love to read this book I have heard much about.

Divergent

I have very sensitive eyes, so I will definitely be packing my sunglasses! (self portrait)

And finally, I rarely have the chance to paint my toenails, and what better place to do it than the beach, where I will be staring at them all day!  I am a huge OPI fan and I love this pale pink in the summer when my skin is slightly tanned....

Thank you so much, Denise, for having me here today to share a look inside my beach bag!

Thank you Cassie for sharin', I knew I'd love what's in her bag as much as I love what's in her house!

Don't forget to check out Shannon Berrey's bag here...

{ Handmade Cork Board with Fabric Scraps }

A friend dropped off a few bags of giveaway clothes the other day for me to use to make crafts.
I couldn't resist making something out of these well worn jeans.
The denim was perfectly aged and I could resist using it for something in the girls room.

I decided to use the denim to wrap a cork board I had.

I wrapped the whole cork board with one leg of the jeans, and hot glued the material to the back.

The corners were wrapped like a present.

The denim was well wore, so there were marks here and there, like this white paint splatter.

I searched the internet for an image I thought would look cute and cover the paint mark.

I pulled together some other scraps I had in my craft room.
A teal wool, some brown flannel damask, and a gray jersey knit.

I cut some teal wool in a branch shape.

And, ta-da, the paint splatter disappears.

Some little birds to perk on the branches cut out of the gray knit.

I screwed "D" hooks onto the back of the cork board.

{ Home Tour ~ Winder & Main }

Winder and Main {LBP}

Hi I'm Meg, I write over at Winder and Main. I was so excited when Denise asked me to give you all a tour of our home. This is the 5th home we have lived in within the past 6 years. Due to hubby's job we move around a lot, which also means we rent instead of own our own home. Because it's a rental we can't change the permanent pieces of the house but we try to create our own personal touch through the decor. We love a cozy, cottage, almost farmhouse look you might find somewhere in New England.

When you walk in the front door you see the living/family room straight ahead.

I've slip-covered the sofas to try and keep up with our three young boys, they get washed quite often.

I love baskets so you'll see them throughout our home to hold a variety of different things.

Yes that is our own personal putting green in the living room, not sure if I'm the world's best wife or the world's craziest, but that's what happens when you marry a golfer. I'm hoping we will be in another house with a men's den once again so it can be hidden placed in there instead of out in the open.

A little sliver peek into the kitchen.

You can read the story behind this table here, it's probably my most favorite piece of furniture in the home.

My hubby was a state chess champ when he was younger so one of the glass urns is filled with some chess pieces he bought in Austria once. The other has an Ikea plant in it.

The prints above the bookcases which are hard to see are from my trip to France where I studied abroad in high school.

This rocking horse was handmade by my grandfather for out boys. I'm in the process of painting it.

Behind the living room is the kitchen and eating area. Our kitchen is really ugly bottom of the line builder grade so we'll skip that area but here is the breakfast nook. The chalkboard holds quotes and birthday messages, whatever event happens to be going on, but at the moment it is where we are creating our summer activity list.

This basket holds our napkins and a milk glass bowl full of fruit.

Kind of across from the kitchen is our master bedroom. It's not very masterly but it works for the moment.

I was inspired by a photo I saw on Pinterest for the bird prints. They came from a book I bought a few years ago and all the frames I already had but painted black. {please pardon the missing lamp shade, these were taken a while ago}.

This is our playroom/guestroom turned into our oldest son's bedroom. You can read more about the striped shams here. The pillow in front is a pillow I made for him when he lost his first tooth. There is a pocket on the front where he places his tooth for the tooth fairy to collect.

His nightstand used to be my vanity as a little girl. Kitty likes it in there too.

His dresser which you can read more about here and here. I love vintage globes so whenever I see one in good shape I purchase it for our little collection. We are not English, just admire the flag.

I can't take full credit for this idea but I love it! This vintage printer's tray holds the boys' Lego people. The painting above the tray was done by my son right after we found out we would be adding a third baby to our family.

The bulletin is made from an old frame I had in storage. I will be writing more about it later. The personal chalkboards were talked about here. They each have their own and draw on them daily.

This is the bunk room where the two youngest sleep. You can read all the details about it here.

The art work, except the large fish, are from thrift stores. They all have water and fishing in common. The large paint by number on the right was the initial inspiration for the room.

And that's our home. Hope you enjoyed the tour. Thank you Denise so much for inviting me over today!

~Meg
Meg's house is the cutest, and you'd never know it's a rental it's so warm and cozy.
Her master bedroom is one of my all time favorites in blog land, love those brown floral pillows!
And, if you like what you saw, check out Meg's shop to make them your own!
Thanks for sharin' Meg
